版权页：   插图：    When an official was summoned or introduced to court,a eunuch from the palace memorial section first had to read the summoning order and announce the official's name.Following the announcement,the official had to kowtow upon stepping into the hall and say clearly "Servant soand-so wishes to salute the emperor." If a Manchu official,he must call himself a "lackey." Then the official got up and walked to the foot of the emperor's wooden couch to kneel down on a white felt mat placed there.An official must not speak until the emperor invited him to.If more than one official were to be summoned to see the emperor they were not allowed to talk to one another,but must wait until the emperor addressed them.No matter how long the meeting with the emperor lasted,an official must remain on his knees until the emperor said "You may bow now" - signaling the end of meeting.Only then could he get up,walk backwards to the door,and then turn to exit. During the Qing Dynasty,only a few exceptional individuals possessing special status had the right to sit or stand while speaking to an emperor.Prince Regent Duoergun - Emperor Shunzhi's "Royal Uncle" - was exempt from the kneeling procedure.Lord Oboi,who was appointed caretaker to the young Emperor Kangxi,could sit when he talked to the teenage emperor.Prince Gong,and Prince Regent Chun in the dynasties of Tongzhi and Guangxu respectively,was allowed to stand and talk to the emperors. Kneeling throughout an entire meeting with the emperor was a painfui experience.This was why courtiers in the Qing Dynasty wore thick quilted kneepads - it helped relieve the pain of lengthy periods spent on their knees.And they would often rehearse the procedure lest they might fail any of the "etiquettes." Qing courtiers were rarely verbose before the emperor - a long speech would only result in an even longer prostration.
