　　ThegeographerLiMingsenwasborninJiangsuProvincein1938.HegraduatedfromPekingUniversity'sFacultyofGeologyandGeographyin1963.HethenworkedfortheChineseAcademyofSciences'generalcommitteeforinspectingnaturalresources.Forthepastthreedecadesandmore，hehastakenpartincomprehensivescientificsurveysofsouthwesternChinaandtheQinghai-TibetPlateau.HisworkhastakenhimtotheHimalayas，thedepopulatedareaofQiangtang，theHengduanMountains，andtheremotemountainsandwoodsoftheYunnan-GuizhouPlateau.Hehasmadegreatcontributionstonaturalre-sourceandenvironmentalsciencesandwonmanyawardsfortheprogressofscienceandtechnology.In2000，hewontheChineseAcad-emyofSciences'ZhuKezhenmedalforscien-tifjcfieldwork.　　YangYichouwasborninJiangsuProvincein1936andisageographer，geomorphologistandscientificexplorer.Heworksasdeputyperma-nentsecretary-generaloftheChineseAssocia-tionofScientificExploration.HegraduatedfromNanjingUniversity'sFac-ultyofGeographyin1957.In1959，hebegantoresearchtheQinghai-TibetPlateauandhasbeentheremorethan20times.HehasbeentotheYarlungZangboGrandCanyoneighttimes.Hehasmadegreatcontributionstotheexplo-rationofthecanyonandtoprovingthatitistheworld'sbiggestcanyon.HehaswonmajorawardssuchastheNationalNaturalScienceAward（first-class）and the Tan Kah-kee（Chen Jiageng）award for earth sciences.
