　　Rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears “ something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor.　　As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the brides attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health”. But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment:I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride！　　At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to many. During the reception, playful friends decorate the couples car with tissue paper, tin cans and a Just Married sign. When the reception is over, the newlyweds run to their decorated" car and speed off. Many couples take a honeymoon, a one-to-two-week vacation trip, to celebrate their new marriage.　　Almost every culture has rituals to signal a change in ones life. Marriage is one of the most basic life changes for people of all cultures. So its no surprise to find many traditions about getting married.., even in America. Yet each couple follows the traditions in a way that is uniquely their own.　　I do.To Americans these two words carry great meanings. Theycan even change your life, especially if you say them at your ownwedding. Making wedding vows is like signing a contract. NowAmericans dont really think marriage is a business deal. But marriageis a serious business.　　It all begins with engagement. Traditionally, a young man asks thefather of his sweetheart for permission to marry her. If the father agrees,the man later proposes to her. Often he tries to surprise her by popping the question in a romantic way.　　Sometimes the couple just decides together that the time is right toget married. The man usually gives his fiancee a diamond ring as asymbol of their engagement. They may be engaged for weeks, months oreven for years. As the big day approaches, bridal showers andbachelors parties provide many useful gifts. Today many couples alsoreceive counseling during engagement. This prepares them for thechallenges of married life.　　At last its time for the wedding. Although most wedding followlong-held traditions, theres still room for American individualism. Forexample, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some peopleget married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremonywhile skydiving or riding on horseback！ The couple may invite hundredsof people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style ofcolors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things.

　　在历史跨入新世纪的今天，经济全球化进程日益加速，其影响已深入到全社会各个方面。作为世界性语言的英语已成为国际间沟通、交流必不可少的工具。随着我国经济的快速持续发展，综合国力不断增强，我国各领域各个层面涉外活动曰益频繁。在这种形势下，全国范围内的“外语热”便悄然兴起。尤其是英语教育，如今已受到举国上下从未有过的重视。对于广大青年学生来说，这无疑是绝好的客观环境。通过良好的学校教育，近二十年来，已经涌现了一批又一批学有成就的优秀外语人才。不过，就在学青年而论，在英语学习过程中，长期存在这样或那样困难，或学习上事倍功半的问题却不在少数。例如，不少勤奋青年废寝忘食地死记硬背大量单词释义，过于迷信商业运作介入后的某些所谓的英语速成法，造成了不少学习上的误区，以致不少学生误以为只要精读课本，熟记大量生词，不断扩大词汇量，便可精通英语，运用自如。殊不知，忽视英语泛读，不保持精读、泛读的适当比例并持之以恒，英语学习效果必然大打折扣。其实，历来英语教学大纲均有明确规定：中学英语教学目的是对学生进行听说读写的综合训练，培养他们在口头上和书面文字上运用英语的基本能力，其中十分侧重培养阅读能力。现行大纲也着重指出，提高学生英语阅读能力，单纯通过课文教学是不易达到的，必须指导学生在课外阅读相当数量的原文读物，而绝不是突击记忆大量单词能够毕其功于一役的。这充分表明，英语精读与泛读是相辅相成、不可偏废的，而且要保持适当的阅读量比例，并持之以恒。
