　　18世纪，欧洲第一批军事院校出现，并为高级专业科学机构，如炮兵和工程机构，培养未来的军官。这样做实际上只是为达到一些贵族希望通过控制专业技术和教育来垄断军官职位的目的。英国陆军皇家军事学院是早期的军事院校之一，于1747年在伍利奇建立，是皇家炮兵和皇家工程机构的分支，直到1939年二战爆发才关闭。皇家军事学院专门训练骑兵和步兵军官，最初学校位于白金汉郡的马洛，后来迁到了伯克郡的桑德赫斯特，1799年建立，于1939年关闭。这两所学院以联合的形式于1947年重新开放，并命名为英国桑德赫斯特皇家军事学院。从1809年到1861年，英国东印度公司拥有自己的军事学院，其类似皇家军事学院，位于伦敦附近。在澳大利亚，1748年创建第一所军事院校，是以女创始人的名字命名，叫作玛丽亚·特里萨女皇。在法国，军事工程学校于1748年建立，随后1756年建立了炮兵学校。大革命爆发，旧的政体崩溃，1795年新的军事技术学院成立。不久后，法国建立了最具有声望的科学学院，不仅培养炮兵和工程军官，而且还为海军和其他政府部门的技术机构培养军官。Thecole Speciale Militaire，作为一个培养未来军官的相关学校，于1802年建立。1806年在耶拿发生普法战争后，普鲁士重新建立军事体系，形成了一个现代模式的军事院校。葡萄牙作为一个国力较小的国家，于1790年建立了一所军事学校，并于1837年成立了一所多兵种的军事学院。　　拥有军事院校已经成为衡量一个独立国家地位的标志。在欧洲以外的第一所军事院校是位于美国纽约西点的美国陆军军官学院（USMA），直到1812年才正式对外开放。最初，美国陆军军事学院与工程部队合并，建立成为一所多兵种的学院。该学院的毕业生不仅对美国的发展和在保卫边境任务中发挥了重要作用，而且在战争时期是未经训练的卫国民兵或志愿者队伍的骨干。另外，1839年在列克星敦建立的弗吉尼亚军事学院和1842年建立的南卡罗莱纳州军事学院的毕业生，同样在国内事务中发挥着重要的作用。加拿大和澳大利亚的皇家军事学院分别于1874年在安大略和1911年在堪培拉建立，同样担负国家建设的重任，并标志着他们拥有自己的武装部队并以具有独立主权国家的身份出现。在英国统治的印度，1932年印度军事学院在台拉登成立，标志着印度已经成为等待已久的独立自治国家。墨西哥独立两年后，1832年墨西哥军事学院成立。1812年，阿根廷国家军事学院建立，另外，一所培养步兵和骑兵军官的学院于1817年由临时政府建立。　　……
