　　1 The water cycle is the movement of water from the oceans to the land and from the land to the oceans. Its a movement caused by the heat of the sun and the gravity of the earth.　　2 When water falls on the ground as rain, it may go into the earth. Then trees and plants use it for food. Or it may move through the earth to become ground water existing below the surface of the earth. The water not going into the earth may move along its surface. It may move down a hill into a river. In the river carries the water may be carried into a lake or an ocean. There, the water evaporates again and the cycle continues. When water fails on land as snow, the snow will melt and become water again if the weather gets warm. If the weather stays cold, the snow may freeze into ice. About 2 per cent of the earths water exists in ice.　　3 A plant has in its leaves small openings through which water vapor leaves the plant. A large tree may lose 70 gallons of water each day. In this way, plants return water to the air. Human beings and animals do the same through their skin.
