  •     汤亭亭作为美国华裔文学的代表人物,其研究在美国已是一门显学,近年来也逐渐为国内学界所重视。汤亭亭与“美国的东方主义”的关系,无论是在美国还是在国内,一直以来都争论不休,莫衷一是。本书的作者并不急于在“颠覆”或“共谋”之间作一个简单的判断,而是从美国批评界对汤亭亭作品的接受出发来对批评进行再批评,从而探讨美国东方主义中的“中国话语”。该书对于美国东方主义的“中国话语”体系中的典型表述如“奴役女性”,“不可同化的中国人”,“苦力”,“黄祸”等进行了共时性和历时性的考察,在解构历史的同时重建历史。作者以汤亭亭的作品为切入点,证明在美国东方主义铁幕般的语言窒息里,华人是可以表达自己的,其叙述策略和技巧毫不亚于西方的经典作家。正如赛义德指出,“东方主义”是西方君临东方,驾驭东方的工具,其历史悠久,体系完整,目的鲜明。可以说,美国东方主义的“中国话语”建构是美华作家不得不直面的现实遭遇,也是国内多个学术领域都应该重视的课题。所以,“汤亭亭与美国的东方主义”这个命题本身体现了强烈的政治性和现实关注。但“语言的铁幕”中的“语言”二字凸现了作者在批评方法上与传统社会历史批评的不同,即作者力图在对作品的美学价值与社会内容的阐释之间寻找一个平衡。另外,作者以激情有力的语言和创造性的概念对于西方学术话语牢笼的冲击,令人耳目一新。该书不仅为汤亭亭辩驳种种非议,为其在国内美华文学和美国文学研究中确立经典地位提供有力的依据,更是为国内的美华文学研究乃至后殖民理论研究开拓新视野,启发新思维。
