章节摘录

In the morning, he breakfasted in the same way and then drove his flocks to pasture, pushing the rock back afterwards to leave the men imprisoned. In the morning, when Polyphemus opened the cave to let out his sheep and goats, Odysseus and his men escaped with them, each of the men tied to the underside of a ram, and Odysseus clinging to the belly of the largest ram of all. Odysseus' next port of call was the mythical island of Aiaie, the home of the enchantress Kirke9, who was a daughter of Helios by the Okeanid Perse and the sister of Aietes.10 After leaving Kirke's island, Odysseus set off on his journey home, and soon had to confront some fearsome perils, forearmed with advice from Kirke. He had to find his way past the Sirens 11 first of all,'female daimones who sang so enchantingly that passing sailors were lured to their island, where they apparently wasted away because they could turn their attention to nothing other than the sweet singing. Odysseus ordered his men to stop their ears with wax, and had himself bound to the mast, giving strict orders that he should be tied all the tighter if he tried to break loose; and he was thus able to enjoy the song and yet live to tell the tale. The Argonauts were confronted by some of the dangers that threatened Odysseus when they passed through the same seas. As they were sailing past the island of the Sirens-enchanting singers who lured sailors to their death through the beauty of their song. Orpheusn drowned out their voices by strumnung a loud and rapid melody on his lyre.13 There is also a strange story in which Hera persuaded them to engage in a singing-contest with the Muses, who celebrated their victory by plucking out the Sirens' feathers to make crowns for themselves. ……
