Tips for Informative Speaking
* Don't overestimate what the audience knows: lead the audience step by step, define every special term, clarify every idea, illustrate every concept.
* Don't be too technical: adapting to the audience's knowledge about the topic.
* Personalize your ideas (personalize: to present one's ideas in human terms that relate in some fashion to the experience of the audience)
* Avoid abstractions: description, comparison, contrast.
* Be creative

鉴于演讲有着如此的重要性，也就不奇怪世界范围内它数千年来都被传承教授着。几乎所有的文化中都有一个等同与英文“orator（演讲家）”的词存在，它被用来称呼那些具有非凡演讲才能的人。
目前已知的最早的话语演讲记录手稿是于约4500年前被记录在的埃及纸莎草纸上的。在古罗马古希腊时期，人们广泛研究演讲，演讲在市民生活中举足轻重。亚里士多德的《修辞学》，完成于公元前3世纪，如今仍被看作是该学科领域内的创举。数世纪以来，无数知名西方思想家写下大量修辞，演讲，以及语言的著作。近些年来，传播学的研究者们为相关理论和策略的理解提供了日益增多的科学原则。
中国最早的关于演讲实践的记录可以从《尚书》(Book of History)中觅得，该书举出两种演讲类型：誓（taking oath）与诰（imperial mandate）。《战国策》（Intrigues of the Warring States）中记载了战国时期的许多演讲会话。唐代从佛教中引入了包括布道和佛经这些新的说服方式。尽管官话中没有独立的术语确切符合“修辞”的含义，但中国的历史一直满盈着演讲、艺术表达、说服力、建议、论证等等概念和演练内容。当下英文演讲的关注热潮正是中国长久以来对推论艺术的热衷的表现。
