　　Individual reading conferences provide an opportunity for teachers and students to assess and evaluate an individuals progress and to set goals. This is an opportunity for teachers to talk with students about their reading-what books they have read， what difficulties they might be having， what they enjoyed， what they learned or found interesting in their reading， and what goals they want to set.　　While the conference may appear to be an informal discussion， the most effective conferences follow a predictable structure that the teacher and the student prepare for. Students and teachers know how to prepare for the conference， what they will talk about during the conference， and what they will do after the conference. To help students prepare for the conference， you may want to copy and distribute the checklist on page 101 or one that matches your plan for reading conferences.
