意思不过是船长喜欢穿着漂亮整洁的细帆布衣裤显摆一番。

译者加注说，大副（实际上只是助手）的名字Bananas是香蕉的意思。继而出现了白色血液的演绎。实际上Bananas是疯子、糊涂人的意思。
原文是：
I have no idea why the mate was known by that eccentric name. He was called Wheeler, but though he had that English surname there was not a drop of white blood in him.
应译为：
我不知道那伙计为何会有如此古怪的名字。他原来叫惠勒，尽管他有个英国人的姓氏，可他身上没有一滴白人的血液。

译者在页尾加注，说明王尔德是十九世纪著名剧作家（奥斯卡·王尔德）……可是正文刚说了十八世纪的画，怎么会成了王尔德的剧照？王尔德同志是十九世纪差几天就算二十世纪的人了。De Wilde指的是十八世纪的英国画家萨缪尔·德·维尔德。
原文：
On the walls, besides, are old line engravings of the eighteenth century, one of which, and heaven knows how it got there, is after a theatrical picture by De Wilde.
此外，墙上还有十八世纪的古老线雕画，其中一幅是德•维尔德的戏剧场景画的仿作，天知道它怎么会出现在这儿。
