　　The men trudging through the snow in figure 1.1 are scientistsworking in Antarctica. In 1985, the scientist JosephFarman was part of a team of such scientists studying theearths atmosphere over Antarctica. While not a biologist,Farmans work has had a profound influence on biologistsall over the world, for he discovered the "ozone hole."Well look at his work later in this chapter; The importantpoint to focus on now, as we begin our journey into the scienceof biology, is how interrelated all of science is. Biology,the science of life, is part of an even larger and richer tapestry.The more we learn about how the world influences life,and about how the many creatures with which we share theplanet influence each other, the better we can understand ourselves and the world in which we live. The science of biologyis devoted to this larger vision, It provides knowledge about the living world of which we are a part, while ceaselessly bombarding us with questions like those askedby Joseph Farman.

　　When I set out to write The Living World, it was with theintention of creating a text that would be very easy to learnfrom--a book that focused on concepts rather than information.More than most subjects that students encounter, biologyis a set of ideas, and if students can master these basicideas, the rest comes easy. To make the ideas of biology moreaccessible to students, I trimmed away a lot of detail traditionally taught in freshman biology courses, presenting the conceptsof biology--as much as my writing skills would allow--as a narrative. I used analogies frequently, as analogies providesstudents a way to visualize new concepts, to make them concreteand so approachable. A student using The Living World,I hoped, might be exposed to less information than providedby other texts but would walk away knowing more biology.
