Jesus Feeds Five Thousand Men　　7Now Herod the ruler heard about all that had takenplace, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some thatJohn had been raised from the dead, 8by some that Elijah hadappeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets hadarisen. 9Herod said, "John I beheaded but who is this aboutwhom I hear such things?" And he tried to see him.　　loOn their return the apostles told Jesus all they haddone. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a citycalled Bethsaida.　llWhen the crowds found out about it,they followed him and he welcomed them, and spoke to themabout the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed to becured.　　12The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve came tohim and said, "Send the crowd away, so that they may go intothe surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get pro-visions for we are here in a deserted place. " 13But he said tothem, "You give them something to eat. " They said, "Wehave no more than five loaves and two fish~--unless we are togo and buy food for all these people. " 14For there were aboutfive thousand men. And he said to his disciples, "Make themsit down in groups of about fifty each. " 15They did so andmade them all sit down. 16And taking the five loaves and thetwo fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and brokethem, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.17And all ate and were filled. What was left over was gatheredup, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

　　“英文版《圣经》深奥难懂”，这是多数具有初、中级英语水平甚至部分具有相当英语水平的中国读者，在未曾阅读这一西方文化的经典著作之前的一种普遍心理。　　其实不然。《圣经》是基督教的经典。其前半部《旧约》(占全书的四分之三)，最初主要用希伯来文写成；后半部《新约》主要用希腊文写成。《圣经》自公元1世纪至2世纪下半叶成书后被译成各种语言的译本，从而得到广泛的传播。英译《圣经》最早始自英国的欧德罕主教(St．Aldhelnl c．640-709)。首次将全部圣经从拉丁文译成英文的是英国早期宗教改革家约翰·威克里夫(John wyclif c．1320-84)。1611年经荚王詹姆斯一世允准翻译出版的《钦定译本》(the King Janles Version)问世后引起强烈反响，在长达两个多世纪的时间中，被认为是惟一标准译本，是有史以来“空前完美的、最优雅、最受人喜爱的、惟一纯正的英文译本”。《钦定译本》对英语语言文学产生了重大影响。到19世纪中叶，对英译《圣经》进行改革的呼声再起。
