《倫敦新聞畫報》創刊於1842年，是全球首份以圖像為主，配以生動文字描述的一份刊物，它包括隨行船隊記者記下的，不單止東方中國的各種見聞。

然而，本書將其刊物報導抽取與中國、香港或臺灣等相關的內容，匯集成書，並將其翻譯成中文，回饋華人讀者，使其內容、資料更容易、方便流通，；兼且書中的插圖速寫、版畫於藝術界來說亦是不可多得的瑰寶，此書無論於藝術價值或歷史價值都是絕佳收藏讀物。

至於話歸中國史，向來主流均以信史為主，史官、官方的主論述都著眼於一朝興衰，是以錯過太多史料例如貨幣經濟、民間生活等風貌。清代學者章學誠之《文史通義》，提倡「六經皆史」，顯地方志，正跟《倫敦新聞畫報》異工同曲，《倫敦新聞畫報》以圖像為內容主體，吸引目光有趣閱讀，除了提供西方眼光角度怎樣看中國之餘，亦為民間史料、生活、某些風俗儀式揭秘。

本書所輯錄的是由1842年起至1873的晚清時期，在西方人眼中所報導的中國是怎樣的國度，這些舊相片加上文字描述，就能夠提供一個嶄新的角度予我們審視近代史。

中國歷史向來是勝者寫敗者，至今都仍然未有確定、公認的、記錄關於清朝的一部「正史書」，透過蒐集不同的史料，將更加能夠還原歷史面貌，例如中國與外國之間的戰爭因何而起，在西方人的眼中，一些中國人的社會生活習慣、儀式、習俗又是怎樣的呢？中國官修史向來都著重治亂興衰，但在民生觀察上的記載，彷彿甚少提及，於是這冊書，可以讓喜歡研究歷史的讀者獲得更多有用的資訊；至於一張張的舊相片，也可以引起不同讀者的興趣，從圖像作起點去閱讀歷史，一書在手，猶如親身去了歷史博物館飽覽展品一樣。而最重要的是，該些圖片速寫都是駐當地記者或畫家親眼目擊的第一手報導，有時候觀點看法也與中國史料相左，於是可借中、西兩方的史料作更客觀、更有系統的整理。
