本书通过所选文章，勾勒出国际组织理论的发展轨迹：第一阶段在对欧洲区域一体化的研究中形成了功能主义和新功能主义理论，表明国际组织具有削弱国际体系无政府性的功能；第二阶段在新现实主义和新自由制度主义的辩论中形成了现实主义和自由主义国际组织理论，突出了国际制度的独立意义和在促成合作方面的重大作用，研究重点已经从国际组织结构和功能等浅层事实描述转向国际机制、国际规范等深层理论探讨，并从推理层面证明了无政府性的可弱化性；第三阶段在理性主义和建构主义的论战中产生了建构主义国际组织理论。建构主义国际组织理论关注的是国际制度对国家身份的转化作用，强调的是主体间互动，导向的是无政府性的多元意义，强调以合作友善为核心的无政府性是可以被建构起来的。从新现实主义到新自由主义再到建构主义形成了国际组织理论的发展脉络，国际制度的服务功能和建构功能构成了国际组织理论建设的核心思想。这一纵一横两条主线是研究国际组织的一个基本图谱。正因为如此，这部文选是国际组织研究领域里一本很有用处的教科书。
