章节摘录

Since the end of the nineteenth century, American critics have been viewing theinfluence of Puritanism on American thought as a controversial issue. They holdcontradictory opinions on the exact natlare of the influence. As early as 1891, BarrettWendell, one of the founders of American studies, wrote, To understand the America oftoday, we must know the New England of the fathers ( qtd. in Reising 49).KennethMurdock and Perry Miller have also realized the important and positive role Puritanismplayed in American culture. But it is fascinating to find that there is an opposite view.As Henry May documented, young radicals such as Emma Goldman, H.L. Mencken, and others in the first decades of the twentieth century denounced Puritanism for everycrime from prostitution to the American Sunday( qtd. in Reising 49). The two distinctive voices aroused attention at that time. It cannot be denied that theheated debate and discussions on Puritanism prove the importance of Puritanism in thehistory of American culture and thought. The search for the Puritan origins of Americanculture and of the American Self gained momentum during the twenties, receiving a kindof official recognition in 1928 when Norman Foersters The Reinterpretation of AmericanLiterature specified Puritanism, along with the frontier spirit, romanticism and realism, asone of the determining influences on American writing. The debate over the significance ofPuriism, however, had been raging since the turn of the twentieth century, whenPuritanism became a touchstone for discussions of the merits and defects of Americanculture ( Reising 49). According to American critic Russell Reising, Sacvan Bercovitchs view of Puritanismas rhetoric is also the most provreative recent effort to interpret the impact of Puritanismfrom the aspect of American ideologies. In The Puritan Origins of the American Self(1975) and The American Jeremiad (1978), Bercovitch is aware and critical of theAmerican exceptionality rhetoric. He sharply observes the center of the problem and tracesto its Puritan origins.
