　　本书对象为大学英语专业高年级以上学生及有一定英语基础的文学爱好者，目的是介绍美国文学中的精萃，为理解分析所选作家及他们的作品提供指导和帮助，提高读者的阅读水平和欣赏能力。　　全书分上、下两册。上册选入19世纪美国作家1l位；下册选入20世纪作家14位。所选作品包括中、长篇小说的片断、短篇小说、诗歌、散文、文论等不同体裁。　　在美国文学史中我们仅选了25位作家的作品及作品选段，对它们进行较为深入的分析以求向读者提供一把进入美国文学大门的钥匙。由于时间及篇幅所限，一些重要作家及作品未能收入选本，难免有片面的缺点。　　美国文学中许多作家的长篇小说举世闻名，本应选其中章节加以分析，但这样做有时会有上下脱节，不易讲清的弊病，因此凡能有精彩的短篇而这些短篇能在较大程度上反映作家的恩想和写作风格的，我们一般就不从长篇作品中截取片断。选篇及选段长度在三十页左右，都是未经改写的原著。　　各章内容均包括作家简介和选篇分析，作品选篇以及中文洼释三大部分。生平简介侧重对作者创作思想和创作生涯有重大影响的人与事。作品介绍重点是选文的主题恩想和写作技巧，也在一定范围内对作家作横向比较。　　注释只限于历史背景，文化典故及少量词典上不易找到的词。　　上、下两册都有绪论，介绍时代背景、各种文学流派的兴起和发展。
