　　The first modern Olympics were held in 1896 in Athens， the capital of Greece. Since I896， the Olympics have been in many different countries. Most of these countries are in Europe or North America. There have been no Olympics in South America or Africa， The only Asian countries to hold the Olympics were Japan and South Korea.The International Olympic Committee chooses which city holds the Olympics. The Committee has to make sure that the city they choose can organize the Games. It is very hard to organize an event with people from over 100 countries and with more than 300 events. Not every city can do this！In 1990， Beijing held the Asian Games. They were a great success and China decided to bid to hold the Olympics in 2000. Everyone in China was very disappointed when Sydney beat Beijing. Beijing lost by just two votes！But China was determined to hold the Olympics. Beijing made another bid: this time for the 2008 Olympics. It was successful. Beijing won by 34 votes！
