　　I. The importance of phonetic study　　1） Phonetics （语音学） is the science of speech sounds.It deals with the sound system of a language. A language consists of three important elements ，namely， speech sound， vocabulary and grammar. Speech sound is the material form on which word and grammar rely for existence. Divorced from speech sound， word and grammar are non. existent. So the first step in studying any spoken languageis to determine the phonemes （音位） （the basic sounds）.　　English phonetics covers the articulation（发音动作），classification （分类）and combination of the English speech sounds. It also deals with the laws of their changes， the rules of stresses and the intonation in English speech. There fore，to study English phonetics is also the first step in mastering the theoretical knowledge of the English language.　　2） As a means of communication by word of mouth， language is used in oral speech and in reading aloud. Therefore， in order to make oneself easily understood while expressing ones own or other peoples thoughts in any language， one must be able to pronounce sentences in that language quite correctly.

　　《实用英语语音学（修订版）》用简明英语阐述了英语语音、语调的基本知识。　　语音部分包括英语语音的分类，单个音素的形成及连贯言语中语音的结合规律。对于单个音素的描写，除了分析其典型实体外，编者结合自己教学的经验和体会，从中国人学习英语语音的特点出发，对一些带有典型性的错误进行了分析，并指出了纠正的方法；对有的音与汉语中某些相似的音进行了对比。在朗读和会话中容易被忽略的语音问题（如元音的长度、后缀-（e）d，-（e）s，’s和s’的读音等）在编写中都给予了应有的重视。书中还介绍了一些基本的读音规则，希望帮助读者了解英语的读音和拼写之间的关系。但由于英语读音复杂，这些规则中还会有很多例外现象，希望读者不要把它们看成是绝对的。　　语调是学习英语语音的一个极为重要的部分。《实用英语语音学（修订版）》介绍了英语语调的结构、几种常用的调型及其功能和应用。在朗读和会话中容易读错和讲错的一些短语和句型的语调被列在最后一节进行专题介绍。　　《实用英语语音学（修订版）》的主要章、节之后附有形式多样的语言材料供朗读练习之用；每单元之后编有复习练习，帮助读者巩固所学。　　书中大部分材料在湖南师范大学外语系试用过三届，此外，还有几所大专院校亦采用作教材。《实用英语语音学（修订版）》是在总结试用经验的基础上，对讲义进行全面补充和修订而写成的。《实用英语语音学（修订版）》可供大专院校及。师范专科学校英语专业一、二年级学生作为教材；对有一定英语基础而想提高英语语音、语调准确程度的其他专业的学生和自学者《实用英语语音学（修订版）》可作为实践性读物；亦可供英语教师作为教学参考书。　　《实用英语语音学（修订版）》稿完成后由湖南师范大学外语系赵甄陶同志细心审阅和订正。
