　　Pilot Pris Blum was taxying her single-engine plane at the West Countyairport when she noticed corporate jets taking off or landing nearly empty. Anidea came to her. Blum had breast cancer years earlier, so she knew howexpensive and grueling transportation was for cancer patients who had totravel for specialized treatment. Today, Corporate Angel Network transportcancer patients all over the country at no charge at all. The group has accessto some 1,500 jets from over 500 companies. If a participating jet s itinerarymatches that of the patient, flight arrangements are made.　　A girl was 10 months old when she was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer.Her parents decided to take her for experimental non-radiation-basedtreatments in Philadelphia, 300 miles from their home near Pittsburgh. Fortheir first commercial flight, they had to navigate a packed airport, a noisycoach cabin, then baggage claim —— trying conditions with any baby, let aloneone battling cancer.

　　本套教材共四级，分四个学期使用，其中指导手册主要提供练习答案和听力教材的文字内容。便于学生自学使用。　　在编写过程中，我们充分考虑了各地电大学生水平的差异以及成人学习英语可能存在的各种困难，始终把学生的特点和需求当作指导编写工作的准绳。怎样使用指导手册呢？我们建议，教师在教学中根据需要灵活掌握，既可以在开学初将指导手册随学习手册一起发给学生，便于学生自学，也可以由教师自己掌握。每学完一个单元的课文之后，再将该单元相关的答案和文字材料发给学生，供他们进行自我评估和纠错并巩固所学知识。　　第四级主要有以下特点：1．调整布局，使结构更趋合理、清晰。从第三级起，每一个单元由“Core Listening”，“Self．Assessment Exercises”和“Supplementary Listening”三部分组成。其中“Core Listening，为基础核心内容，学生应该精听；“Self-Assessment Exercises”是自测练习，学生可以将其视为衡量自己达到何种程度的标尺。“Supplementary Listening”是为学有余力者设计的，是学生泛听的素材。2．取源于英美原声的资料明显增多，其中不少是“VOA”的特别速度以及标准速度的英语节目，因而英语语言也更加地道。3．内容方面适度引进了诸如库尔斯克号核潜艇的沉没、“9·11”恐怖分子袭击事件、克隆等当今热门主题的讨论和时事新闻，试图给人一种时代感。4．新增了“Tuning In”和“Dictation”等内容，以逐步培养学生英语笔记的能力。
