“Hyong-sik did not know what to do. He had to go to P'yongyang, but going to dinner at Elder Kim's house seemed more important. He was too ashamed, though, to say 'yes' to the pastor, and abandon his resolve to find Yong-ch'ae's body just because he was suddenly intoxicated with Son-hyong. The mere mention of getting engaged to Son-hyong made him happy. He even thought he was lucky that Yong-ch'ae had happened to die just then. In addition to that, he would be going to study in the United States! He could not help but feel drawn to the offer. To study in the West, just as he had wanted to all his life, and with a beautiful woman who he loved! Either on of these would have been compelling offers to Hyong-sik, but to have both! A voice within him could not help but say that Hyong-sik had received a great blessing. If one had looked carefully at Hyong-sik's face as he sat with his head lowered as if in pain, one would have clearly seen a look of irrepressible happiness. His face had been unhappy when he had first seen the pastor. One by one, though, the pastor's words did away with the sad expression on his face, and imbued instead a happy expression. It was like the way snow melts all at once in the warm spring sunshine, and the mountains and fields are suddenly suffused with spring colors. Hyong-sik therefore could not bring himself to lift his head. He was ashamed to show others how happy he was. Hyong-sik tried to wear a sad expression. He deliberately tried, moreover, to make himself feel sad.”

“They walked southward along a sloping path at the foot of the city walls. Small leaves of grass hung limply, slightly wilted in the hot sun. Hyong-sik looked at the crumbling city walls, and thought about the ancestors who had built those walls, and the prosperity of the ancestors, witnessed by the walls. He wondered how many times those walls had been struck by bullets and cannonballs. The walls that stood above the sloping path seemed to have emotions and tears, like human being. They looked sad, as though they had much to say but no one to listen to them.”
