章节摘录
版权页: 插图: Another amazing contribution by Liang Sicheng during the World War II was his suggestion that the American Air Force not bomb the two Japanese cities of Kyoto and Nara in order to preserve ancient architecture there.American officers did not understand why Liang Sicheng wanted to protect a country hostile to China.Liang's brother and Lin's brother were killed in the war against the Japanese. But Liang said the architecture belonged to the whole human race, not just a nation, and that those very old pieces of architecture would be irreplaceable. His suggestion was adopted by the Allied Forces. After the war,Liang Sicheng set up the architecture department of Tsinghua University in 1946.He was also a member of the consulting panel that designed the United Nations headquarters in New York. At the beginning of the People's Republic of China, both Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin were respected by the communist leaders.Lin Huiyin was involved in the design of the national emblem and the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tiananmen Square. She was always a strong support to Liang Sicheng and often provided inspiration. However, she had suffered a lung problem since she was young, and she died in 1955 at age 51.She died young, but perhaps this was fortunate for her, since she escaped the sufferings of the "cultural revolution" in 1966-1976.Her husband was not so fortunate.
