章节摘录

A 17-year-old US mariner steered(驾驶) his battered sailboat into a Southrn California harbor on Thursday to complete an exhausting 13-month voyage and became the youngest person to sail around the world alone. Zac Sunderland arrived in Marina Del Rey aboard his 36-foot sloop(帆船) Intrepid at about 10 am local time. During his 28,000-nautical-mile(海里) journey, he braved storms, equipment failures, and close calls with freighters and a run-in with suspected pirates. "It's awesome to be back," Sunderland, of Thousand Oaks, California, said after he was welcomed home by a flotilla of well-wishers. Fewer than 250 people have sailed solo around the globe, with three times that many scaling the top of Mount Everest, according to the American Sailing Association, which certified Sunderland's feat. He left Marina Del Rey, just south of Los Angeles, on June 14,2008, and celebrated his 17 th brirthday at seawall off Africa's Cape of Good Hope. His return was delayed near the end of his voyage when his single-masted boat sustained a broken bulkhead in rough seas off Mexico, forcing him to stop at Puerto Vallarta long enough for his father to fly in to make repairs. Another tense moment occurred in the Indian Ocean off lndonesia, where the Intrepid was approached by a suspected pirate boat. The intruders fled after a plane flew overhead and Sunderland climbed onto his deck with a gun to warn them off, said Charlie Nobles, executive director of the association. Sunderland, who remained in satellite telephone contact with his father during the voyage, dumped the gun before entering Mexican waters, where it is illegal to carry private firearms. He becomes the first person under 18 to circumnavigate(环绕) the globe by sea alone, and the youngest to date. The previous record-holder was David Dicks of Australia, who completed his voyage in November 1996 at age 18. ()5. Which of the experiences about Zac Sunderland's solo travel is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. He once struggled with the storms. B. He met with some equipment problems. C. He came across a suspected pirate boat. D. He had made many friends with others. ()6. What was the reason for Zac Sunderland's delay in the course of return? A. There was something wrong with his sailboat. B. He was hurt badly in the course of voyage. C. There was no money for him to do it. D. He was invited to visit Puerto Vallarta. ()7. Which of the following can't you do in Mexico? A. Buy some things in the local stores. B. Take pictures of the beautiful city. C. Take some weapons to protect yourself. D. Enjoy yourself in the city on your own. ()8. What does the last paragraph imply? A. David Dicks is the first person to do a solo voyage. B. Zac Sunderland has created a new record presently. C. David Dicks is younger than Zac Sunderland. D. The two youths come from different countries. About ten years ago, a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny, black, 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE, which was only two months old. He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no child came out, but a brick sailed out and-WHUMP! -it hit the Jag's shiny black side door! SCREECH! ! ……
