　　Electrical engineering, sometimes referred to as electrical and electronicengineering, is a field of engineering that deals with the study and application ofelectricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The field first became an identifiableoccupation in the late nineteenth century after commercialization of the electric telegraphand electrical power supply. It now covers a range of subtopics including power,electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications. Electrical engineering may or may not include electronic engineering. Where adistinction is made, usually outside of the United States, electrical engineering isconsidered to deal with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems suchas power transmission and motor control, whereas electronic engineering deals with thestudy of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits.Alternatively, electrical engineers are usually concerned with using electricity to transmitenergy, while electronic engineers are concerned with using electricity to transmitinformation.

　　信息化社会进程的不断加快使人们越来越清楚地意识到语言是获取信息的最重要的手段之一，较为通畅地阅读和翻译专业英语文献资料已成为高等院校学生及科研工作者必须具备的能力。　　然而，学生在完成大学公共英语课程的学习之后，尚不能做到很好地理解和阅读本专业的英语文献和资料。根据教育部关于高等学校专业英语阶段英语教材的相关规划，本着培养复合型应用人才的目的，并结合学生毕业后的工作实际，我们编写了《电气与信息工程专业英语》，力求使学生了解和基本掌握今后工作所需的实际专业英语知识，重点掌握专业术语和概念的英文表述，提高专业英文文献的阅读能力。　　本教材由30篇课文组成，涉及电气与电子技术、自动化与测试技术、通信与计算机工程等内容。为适应专业英语教学与时俱进的时代性要求，本教材所有选编课文均出自维基百科，这是因为维基百科各条目的编者主要来自各高校和研究机构的学者与专家，具有一定的权威性和较高的参考价值。此外，它涉及各专业领域，阐述由浅人深，由表及里；交叉学科关系明确，术语链接功能强大，条目内容更新速度快，师生均可将其作为教学辅助手段。本教材力求所选编的文章既对学生所学过的课程进行了必要的覆盖、拓宽和延伸，又反映了电气与信息工程的现状和发展趋势，并做到使读者专业英语阅读水平得到提高的同时，又了解了学科前沿。
