Paul Gauguin(1948-1903)took up painting full-time when he was 35 years old after an intense life a s a sailor and a successful stockbroker His early painting is reminiscent of Pissarro while he was under the in fulence of the Barbizon painters Like all Post-lmpressionist artists Gauguin passed through an lmpressinist phase but became dissatisfied with the limitations of the style and advanced byeyond it Symbolism was a reaction to Courbets Realism and aregud for an art that had the same elogquence directness and universality as a symbol an aret that concentrated syntheses of impressions ideas and experiences Gauguin used intense unnatural color witheout any indication of a light source in the scene.
