内容概要
王岚，1965年出生，1982年考入洛阳解决军外国语学院，1998年3月于北京外国语大学获博士学位。现任解放军外国语学院英语系主任、教授、博士生导师，全国英国文学学会常务理事，河南省外国文学学会常务理事。主要研究方向为英美戏剧、当代英国文学。近年来发表论文20余篇，包括“《盲剌客》：一部加拿大后现代女性主义的杰作”、“反英雄”等。

全书共分六章。第一章简要介绍了詹姆斯一世后斯的悲剧在国内外的研究现状，指出它们在国外学术界的重要地位和国内研究的匮乏，以及本书的写作初衰，即希望通过对其中几部重要悲剧中女性角色的研究唤起国内学者对英国文学史上这一重要时期的生视。
第二章主要对比詹姆斯一世后期的英国悲剧与莎士比亚时期的悲剧在主题、人物等方面的异同，揭示它们之间的明显区别，即莎士比亚时期的英国悲剧男性占绝对的主导地位，而在詹姆斯一世后期的悲剧中占中心位置的往往是女性人物；前者往往以战争或政治生活为大背景，后者更多的是对家庭、感情世界等的关注；前者通常有一个个性鲜明的主人公，而在后斯的悲剧中主人公的地位有时会很不明确。
第三章分析了造成这些区别的社会、哲学、文学思潮等各种因素，如作家个人的成长经历，詹姆斯一世及其宫廷的艺术品味对创作的影响。
第四章探讨了所选的六部悲剧中女主人公的性格对各自悲剧命运的影响。
第五章从社会角度分析了导致这些女主人公悲剧命运的因素，如王室成员或贵族的腐败堕落对社会风气的影响、父权制对女性的种种压制、贪图享乐的思想对青年女性思想的侵蚀、传统贞操观对女性追求自由生活的束缚等等。
第六章是个简短的小结。文学研究的目的之一是对社会、对人有更深入的了解。
