  •     一开始的练习太可怕!大段大段背诵、转译、缩写什么,让人望而却步。偷工减料做三题跳一题地糊弄完第三章,终于发现后面大段大段的练习都是比较传统的形式了。什么改时态错误啦主动被动语态变换啦直接引语间接引语变换啦,终于长出了一口气啊。原来这本书最难的是在最开始啊。尽管一开始的练习我都是偷工减料做的,只管做,也不管做的对不对,但是就这么做下来,形成了写的习惯,不那么怵了。习惯和心态上的转变,是最大的收获、最大的突破。
  •     书是好书,没问题,但是重点是读完后留下的东西。个人感觉本书的精华在于提供的方法,如果你真心要学,就该按其第三章的方法自己勤加练习,定然可以奏效。ps:之前的回答很赞,如果想要系统的看看语法,还是换本张道真的看看吧。
  •     在我决定要写这篇评论的时候,豆瓣显示该书只有24个评价。那么好的书没什么人知道的确是很可惜。秉承葛传槼先生啰嗦到死但却无一句废话的奇葩写作风格(我只学前一点),我以目录标题为单位决定记录一下各部分的内容和我的一点儿感受,以表示我对作者的敬意。不定时更新。【CHARTER 1-INTRODUCTION】这个部分由五个小标题组成。打开书,首先第一个是composition and compositions,然后,我仿佛看到一个极其啰嗦的老大爷开始在我面前絮絮叨叨:“前者是不可数名词,指代写作技巧;后者是可数的,哎呀呀怎么说好捏?可以是一个句子,又可以是N册的书……这个意思好模糊肿么办,还可以是你们在学校套模板写的那种应试作文哦亲……对了,我本来想把这本书叫做The Writing of English and Rhetoric的。为什么去掉了呢?唔……我觉得它没什么实际意思,你等小孩儿到时想多了怎么办?而且听起来像该死的美国佬……”这部分没什么特别大的意义,主要是介绍一下这本书是给谁看的,我等天朝英语渣在学习写作的时候会遇到什么困难,还有……他为什么要把书名去掉and Rhetoric( ̄_ ̄|||) 我觉得比较有趣的是第三个小标题叫做Your Advantage ,他说:像英语为母语的小孩就特别喜欢用那种该死的双重否定,比如说“I don't know nothing about him"(正确说法为“I know nothing about him”或“I don't know anything about him”),你们听都没听过,没机会犯这种错误……哈哈我觉得这绝对是高端黑啊!【CHARPTER 2-MECHANICS OF COMPOSITION】第二部分十页都不到,可是包罗万象,lz看得肃然起敬!从写作的时候题目写哪里,单词怎么断开,到写错了应该怎么改……当然还有很诡异的,你要用一张白色的纸和蓝黑墨水;最后,当你看到他对你说“写完要把纸中间对折,太厚了折不了可以卷起来”的时候,真的是一口老血喷出,五体投地。什么是大师?大师就是抠细节的偏执狂啊。总之五个字,写作要规范。【CHARPTER 3-LEARNING TO WRITE】这一部分一开始就说明了写作困难的原因并不在于没东西写,而在于不知道如何地道地表达出来。葛老先生认为,你要表达的东西,其实很多时候前人已经写过类似的文章了,所以阅读借鉴是很重要的。然而,他发现很多学生在阅读的时候,只把精力放在故事剧情的进展上,而忽略了研究文章中地道的优美的遣词造句。这就是所谓的read a story for the story rather than English, 是非常不可取的。因此这本书的练习一就给出了五篇文章要求背诵,练习二要求在练习一的文章里找出尽可能多的语法点、句式结构和词汇用法等等进行模仿造句。目的应该就是要求读者吧焦点放在English上面吧。后面还有一些写作练习,要求要多查阅字典,熟悉普通词的用法。第二就是句子和段落的重写,意思就是把一些比较句式复杂或难以理解的句子和段落,用最简单清晰的句子重新表达出来——我觉得这一部分对于阅读能力的提高也是很有好处的。第三是写文段概括,这个参加过广东高考的朋友都懂的,只是书中的文章绝对是没有高考那么容易的。其它练习方法就不多说了。【CHARPTER 4-WRITING CORRECTLY】其实我个人觉得这一部分还挺啰嗦的(这难道不是一贯风格?不可弃呀不可弃)。总的来说,所谓的correct English应该是指代用法地道的(用法地道一定合乎语法,因为特殊用法可以视为语法中的特例部分,合乎语法的句子不一定地道)、现代的规范的书面用语。大家阅读这一部分的时候会获得详尽到抓狂的解释,比如葛老先生会用一百字左右来给你解释“Modern English”的专业释义和通用含义……我真的没办法详细写下去了大家去看吧。68到95页是对美式英语和英式英语中词汇的不同用法的比较。这个不多说。【CHARPTER 5-WRITING CORRECTLY(CONTINUED)】在这一部分中,会介绍大量的语法点和习语。这一部分是“全书最长的,也许是最重要的”。我自己看着一部分的时候其实有点烦躁,语法什么的其实无论是看中文或看英文都很无聊,倘若是用英文看,对我等英语渣来说速度还会变慢,不过看英文反而会比较好理解不知道为什么……这部分的语法点并没有很详细,(作者吐槽:这又不是语法书),所以大家其实可以去看看张道真的那本。不过相比普通语法书都会用一些比较简单的作为例子,这里所用的所有例句都师出名家,标明作者,全是H G Wells,James Hilton之类的然后我觉得作者真的太认真了这一点又让我跪了……这里我主要PO一下学习语法和习惯用语的几条建议.(我好懒,不想翻译对不起)这里真的很好笑的,特别是idiom那部分真是太萌了。(1)About the Study of Grammarhttp://book.douban.com/annotation/30425045/(2)About the Study of Idiomhttp://book.douban.com/annotation/30425228/【CHARPTER 6-WRITING WELL】写作就是要使读者更好地理解自己想要表达什么。要想写得好,不能迷信某些传统规则,最重要的不是规则,而是要表达得“自然”。写得好不好在于作者遣词造句的能力。本章基本是在讲词汇和句子结构的问题(句子占大部分),如何贴切地用词,从一个好的句子所拥有的特性来分析如何写得通顺明了。下面是我自己看书之后总结的一小部分关于词汇运用的读书笔记:怎么样才能选好词?作者认为首先要有很大的词汇量;倘若词汇量不够,你是无法用最贴切的词语去表达你想要描述的事物的,你只能退而求其次,挑一个你能想到的且最接近你要表达的意思的词。其次,你应该多看字典,了解词语的含义。很多时候你不是不知道某个词,而是不知道这个词可以用来表达你所要描述的状况或事物,因此应该了解词语的各种意思与用法。【CHARPTER 7-PARAGRAPHS】这里讲的是段落。首先讲了段落的定义、长度,段落与提纲的关系以及中心句,相对的练习也比较简单,比如找中心句什么的。我觉得主要是通过阅读先感觉一下吧。随后作者会告诉你段落是怎么样发展的,一个好的段落具备什么条件以及段落之间的转折。【CHARPTER 8-FORMS OF COMPOSITIONS】该部分详细介绍了写作中的四种文体:narration(记述文),description(描写文),exposition(说明文),argument(议论文)每种文体应该怎么写,有什么注意事项(比如说用什么样的时态,避免花哨无用的描写等等)这本书的练习量异常巨大,我读了两遍可是还是没有毅力做完,这令我想起了华罗庚先生的一句话:一分辛苦一分才。叹气,自勉……好好努力做完吧。祝大家阅读愉快。----------------------------------------完结----------------------------------------P.S.,感谢文冤阁大学士介绍这本书,不然我一辈子都不会找来读。

  •     本科课程有英语写作,因不是英专,课本假大空的。于是买了一本葛先生粗翻了一遍,仅此而已都觉受益匪浅。有精力要好好看的。

  •     如同初读的感觉:絮絮叨叨,细碎,但很受用。老学究或者大师多是偏执狂,死扣小细节。读的时候总禁不住想起大学的论文导师,修改20还是30遍的“折磨”,无非也是扣个细节。那时候的不理解现在想想更多的是感谢。虽然没什么诚意,因为我都忘了她的名。所读的大学还蛮垃圾,所幸遇到的几个老师倒还不错。学到了些东西。
  •     事无巨细的教科书。题目是英语写作,但更多是谈英语而非写作,对于初学者帮助更多,因为里面附上了大量作者常年英语积累下来的笔记。然而太过详尽有点缺失了方法论的探讨。

  •     自学成才的葛先生确实有一套……可谓面面俱到,只是编排方式比起市面“畅销书”也许略失聪明。最值得狠下功夫的应当是书中提供的背诵范文(背背背!!!)。如果后面的章节都能以此展开有所发散也许会更好。另外Amazon kindle版才6块钱!
