William Shakespeare was born on April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on Englands Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three childrentheir older daughter, Susanna, and the twins, Judith and Hamnet.Hamnet, Shakespeares only son, died in childhood.The bulk of Shakespeares working life was spent, not in Stratford, but in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He had a successful career in London as a playwright and actor and was a shareholder in the acting company the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He produced most of his plays between 1589 and 1613. Sometime between 1610 and 1613, Shakespeare is thoughtto have retired from the stage and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616.

  •     根据我美丽的老师、莎士比亚学者Linda Charnes,这本戏剧和性别意识、同性爱欲、异性爱欲有关,然而它的落脚点却并非在此。我们要关注的是:社会会对踏出它的规范之外的人做什么?它让他们不能达到自己的愿望,成为可怜的替罪羊(scapegoat)。仆人Marvolio妄想marry up,通过与主人的婚姻获得地位与金钱,这是社会不允许的,于是他的愿望落空,成为替罪羊。贵族小姐Olivia公然反对符合社会规范的包办婚姻,在婚姻大事上展现了充分的意志(agency),爱上了女扮男装的仆人Viola,于是她就必须被捉弄(screwed over), 嫁给Viola的胞兄Sebbastian,而上天可怜我们的Olivia,Sebbastian除了有和Viola一样的外貌,他的男性气概和智慧(masculinity and wittiness),根本连妹妹的百分之一都不足——我们见过他在上岸后就迫不及待地摆脱自己的同性爱人Antonio,我们见过他明知不对还顺水推舟娶了误以为他是Viola的Olivia,更见过他在结婚后马上就对Antonia说“How have the hours racked and tortured me, since I have lost thee!" 剧中唯一坦率直接的爱情,是Antonio和Sebbastian两位男性海面上三个月的缠绵相守,然而却必须在上岸到文明社会的那一刻就被遗忘和放弃,让Anotonio成为本剧中的第三只scapegoat。只有公爵Orsino和Viola的结局是皆大欢喜的,因为只有他们两人的婚姻是匹配的:Orsino的阴柔善感与Viola的智慧和意志正好互补,而两人也刚好是符合婚姻规范的贵族。剧的副标题是What you will,然而超越社会规范达到自己的目的是从来就不会实现的。而我在课后一直在想的问题是,这个时代又如何?比如,同性婚姻的合法已经是不可挡的趋势,可以预见到的将来,平权运动将一直是社会的潮流,人们将持续地要求what they will,这是否意味着,莎翁的戏剧的问题将在今天的社会失去相关性?我们的社会是否已经停止了制造这样的“替罪羊”? 是否人性的问题亘古不变,只是一切都批上了更隐蔽的外衣?
