I wouldn't say Hide and Seek is a great improvement on Knots and Crosses, but I can see the potential of Rebus becoming a regular fixture in the literary world from this book. The intrigue around the story is definitely present, but I find the linkages between themes and stories as well as the motifs at a little bit too deliberate. Would have liked to see more continuations from the first book and I felt like Rebus' character changed too much in the short period of time (perhaps further alterations could be made to the character). It is puzzling to see the case solved so nonchalantly towards the end, it just appeared too easy. What I did enjoy from the ending is how the story, especially the ending opens up so many possibilities of Edinburgh, Rankin does brilliantly at unlocking the city so that many more stories may pour out of it.

兰金老湿果然很喜欢在故事结构和叙述手法上动脑筋，这本看得好过瘾！只写了七天，但是极其丰满紧凑。可惜里头的各种明喻暗喻限于语言水平只能看懂一半，是为一大遗憾。
