内容概要
JACK LONDON (1876-1916) was raised in the Son Francisco Bay area. His love of reading fed his imagination, but it was his thirst for adventure that took him around the country. In his teens, London left school and became a seaman. He was an oyster pirate and a deep-sea sailor before returning to land, riding freight trains around the country as a hobo. Self-educated and headstrong, Jack returned to Oakland and entered the University of California at Berkeley, determined to become a writer. He spent the winter of 1897 in Canada and Alaska, a trip that provided inspiration for his novel The Coll of the Wild.

Buck's first day was like a nightmare...
He had been suddenly jerked from the heart of civilization and flung into the heart of things primordial. No lazy, sunkissed life was this, with nothing to do. Here was neither peace, nor rest, nor a moment's safety. All was confusion and action, and every moment life and limb were in peril for these dogs and men were not town dogs and men. They were savages, all of them...
Buck is a loving pet. Half Saint Bernard and half Scotch shepherd, he is a gentle giant — adored by his owners, respected by other dogs on the ranch. Then without warning, he is stolen, sold, beaten, and made to pull a sled in the harshest winter he has ever known all for the hope of finding gold.
