Saith the Lord: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die——A prisoner cited this famous sentence of The Bible as his last words in this beautiful world. He is Carton, who impressed me in A Tale of Two Cities ,and I saw love, death and hope gathered at him.As many critical realism writers who grew in a harsh living condition or had a twist of fate,Charles Dickens experienced poor and needy life and deeply hated oppressors in the upper class of Europe society and wealthy capitalists. After read A Tale of Two Cities,I was shocked by Sydney Carton and his spirit facing death. At the most part of the novel,Dickens portrayed Carton as a depressing, indifferent and never smiled man.Although as mainstream's perspective the leading roles are Lucie, Charles Darnay and doctor Manette with their love and family love, whereas Carton was a supporting role as a adorer of Lucie's,I still think Carton contained all the emotions which Dickens wished to express such as the love to Lucie, the dissatisfied to the disordered condition effected by the French Revolution, the hope to new life as well as the placidity to the following death.Under such condition which people tended to be radical and sensitive to all nobleman even their innocent offsprings during the French Revolution, people could seem to the dawn of freedom and non-oppressed new life, but placed themselves into a misunderstanding region of failing to distinguish black from white and erstwhile hatred."It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."Carton's stable voice in heart left a unfortunately and relatively wonderful ending which moved me for a long time.
