  •     This book is another examination of exhibition as one of the ways in which colonial powers present, promote, and seek ways to enhance their imperial and colonial control and ambition in a global context. The contribution of this book is that it is focused on Taiwan, under the control of Japan. Although providing no theoretical significance, this book as a case study, is still import for anyone who is interested in the transition of Taiwan in the last one hundred years. The book contains four main chapters that deal respectively on the general history of exhibition (from Europe to Japan), Taiwan as exhibited in Japan, Taiwan as exhibited in Taiwan, and the further influence of exhibition on popular culture within Taiwan. The chapter on the history of exhibition is nothing new, a repetition of what has been told in other books. The problem lies in the experience of Japan: the emergence of Japan in the world of exhibition could be seen as a significant event even for the West. But the author fails to give a look at this issue: Japanese colonial power should be embedded into the structure that had formed before the twentieth century and its rise as either a challenge or a reconfiguration must have re-structured the culture of exhibition, even in the West. Should it be wrong to assume that the exhibition in Japan should be the same as the exhibitions in England? The next chapters on Taiwan's images in Japan and Taiwan per se are the main parts, which are quite informative and insightful. The most interesting part for me is the section on the spacial structure of the exhibitions that represented the colonial hierarchy. The changing imperialist ideology at the turn of the twentieth century contributed to a new understanding of the periphery and centre within an empire, which was well presented in the space arrangement of exhibition that set down a route. The self-identification through watching exhibition in Taiwan was another interesting part. The exhibitions were organised by Japanese and sometimes by local elites, on different purposes. They have attempted to create an image of Taiwan that is related to civilisation and industrialisation. But this image is more virtual than real in that it is more selected than comprehensive. But the author fails to discuss the different strategies and motives under the same name of "exhibition," which could be important. Particularly, when Taiwanese tried to exhibit Taiwan, did they always attempt to present Taiwan in accordance with the discourse of Japan? were there any disputes, tensions, or conflicts between them? The last chapter is not really on topic, but it is quite revealing that how the events of power exhibition could be easily related to the rise of consumerism, tourism culture, and public culture. The conclusion is a bit weak as it summarises the exhibition from a few perspectives: economic, politic, social culture, and spacial. I suppose it would be more powerful if these aspects of exhibition could be integrated together in the conclusion. Another way I think would be helpful is going back to the Qing dynasty, making a comparison between Taiwan under the Qing and Japan. This approach will be beneficial as it would broaden the scope of the book by extending it to the relationship between China, Taiwan, and Japan, and would enable the author to dialogue with the scholarship in the colonial nature of the Qing empire that has been debated in the last decades.
