  •     在大学一年级学习时用的是《小牛津字典》( The Little Oxford Dictionary )。这个字典虽小，但对词义的解释简明扼要。我喜欢它携带方便，随时可以查阅。这是我使用的第一部英英字典，就是用英语解释英语的字典。它的好处是学一个英语词，就同时会学到好几个英语的同义词，例如，学 tiresome (令人厌倦的)这个词时，也学了 wearisome ， tedious ， annoying 这些同义词。另外《小牛津字典》的注音是英国音。我上大学后，不知从那里学来了—种偏见，即认为英国音比美国音文雅，因此要干方百计地学英国音。到了大学高年级我开始使用《袖珍牛津字典》( The Pocket Oxforf Dictionary )，我的注意力开始转移到习惯短语和词源上面。例如， get the better of (someone) 这个短语就被该字典解释为 defeat (战胜，打败)， outwit (斗智制胜，使人上当)。这样的解释既精练，又准确。后来我当研究生【西南联合大学：仅仅毕业三位外文硕士】，毕业后留在西南联大教书时使用的是《简明牛津词典》( The Concise Oxforf Dictionary )。这个词典具有上述《袖珍牛津字典》的优点，但比前者更为详尽。——已故语言学家丁声树【《现代汉语词典》主编之一】先生用过的一本《简明牛津词典》。在这本词典每页的页边空白处丁先生都写满了密密麻麻的字。这些字是他写的眉批和读书心得。在北京大学当英语系主任时，常用的英英词典有二：一是《钱伯氏二十世纪词典》( Chambers 20th Century Dictionary )，主要为了阅读早期英国文学作品，因为这部词典特别收录了乔叟、斯宾塞、莎土比亚和密尔顿诗中有些词的特殊词义。另一部词典是《韦氏新世界词典》( Webster's New World Dictionary )，主要为了阅读当代美国报刊和文学作品，因为这部词典着重纪录了美国英语的持殊词义和用法，而且还收入了许多新词。
