版权页：   插图：   Before 1945, most people wrote with fountain pens. The biggest problemwith a fountain pen is that it has to be filled, sometimes more than once aday. The ballpoint pen solved this problem. However, it took nearly 60 yearsfor inventors to get it to work properly. In a ballpoint pen, the writing tip is a tiny ball that rolls as you write. Partof the ball is inside the pen and picks up ink from the ink supply. As the ballrolls, the ink-covered part rolls outside. The ink then flows from the ball tothe paper you are writing on. Inventors had been working on ballpoint pens since 1888 when JohnLoud, an American leather tanner, patented a marking pen with a roller balltip. Loud's rolling ball pen was never produced, nor were any of the other350 patents for ball-type pens issued over the next 50 years. The major problemwith all these pens was the ink. If the ink was too watery, the pens wouldleak. If the ink was too thick, it would harden inside the pen. Depending onthe temperature, the ink would sometimes do both. Ballpoint pens hadanother problem, too. Because they depended on gravity to carry the inkdown to the rolling ball at the bottom of the pen, ballpoints had to be heldstraight up, but most people tilt a pen when they write. Two Hungarian brothers, Georg and Ladislas Biro, found the solution toboth problems. Working as a journalist, Georg Biro noticed that newspaperink dried quickly, leaving the paper smudge-free. This gave him the idea touse this syrupy ink for pens. However, the thicker ink would not flow from aregular metal tip, so he fitted his pen with a ball bearing that acted like asponge. The roller ball soaked up ink from the tube inside the pen. Now thepen could be held at an angle.
