French composer Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) came late to music and his promising career was cut tragically short by a fatal accident; nevertheless, his musical legacy embraces compositions in every genre, including the critically acclaimed Concerto in D for Piano, Violin and String Quartet.    This masterful work exhibits the significant influence of Cesar Franck, with whom Chausson studied, particularly in its cyclical form, numerous modula-tions, and deeply expressive lyricism. Chausson hoped to foster a rediscovery of classic forms, especially in chamber music. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians notes that "He wanted to prove, above all.., that a sonata or a quartet may contain as much music as a whole opera."
